Like other Studio Ghibli films, Princess Mononoke's main themes center on ideas of the preservation and protection of nature and present a nuanced depiction of the relationship between humanity and the environment. The movie follows Ashitake, the last Emishi Prince, as he finds himself embroiled in a conflict between the humans of Iron Town and the spirits of the nearby forest.
Princess Mononoke also won several notable awards, including Best Film at the Mainichi Film Awards and Best Director at the Nikkan Sports Film Awards in 1997 and Best Home Video Release at the Saturn Awards in 2001. Both movies are among the top ten highest-grossing anime movies of all time alongside Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train, Your Name and Pokémon: The First Movie. The film went on to earn over $169 million and held Japan's box office record for domestic films until the premiere of Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away in 2001.
